About

Did you ever have a scary place when you were a child that you were afraid of? I know I sure did. One of the scariest things in my childhood was the attic.  I always believed trolls or monsters lived there and my imagination would only allow the worst of things to be believed lived there.  Our attic didn’t have any lights so it was always pitch black and haunting to look at.  The ladder to get up into our attic came down from the ceiling and creaked and squeaked.  Then when you climbed up you had to hope spiders didn’t come down.  So the first time I climbed up with a flashlight I was terrified.  I peeked my head up and saw old shipping boxes but no monsters.  From that point on I felt better about my attic and now I am a big fan or organizing them to store household items that I don’t use very often.

Today, I find myself in a brand new home to me.  It is not actually brand new at all, but I know it has an attic and I am excited to put it to good use. I have about 10 very large boxes full of items that I will likely not use very frequently at all.  Instead I plan on putting them into the attic.  Currently, they are in my garage and taking up space that I could be using to get another car in there!  So my plan is to go to the store and pick up some shipping boxes.  I know I will have to be careful on the size because the hole to get into the attic is not very large. I also don’t want too much weight in any box because I have to go up a very sketchy ladder and carry the box with me.  I want to be safe and not be worried about falling off a ladder in my garage and hurting myself seriously.  So once I go and get the boxes I then I have to make sure the attic is prepared to take the weight.

What I mean is that homes are designed on 2x4’s generally and mine is only partially covered with floor boards.  So I will also have to get some sheets of plywood that will fit through the hole.  I will then lay them on the 2x4’s up in the attic and be able to create a floor on the areas that do not have any.  This will allow me to store more items in the attic safely.  If I didn’t do that the items would go straight onto the ceiling sheetrock and most likely break through the ceiling.  That is not something I want to happen. Now with that set up its time to reorganize!
